Casa Sanabria sits gracefully at the edge of the grasslands and a protected forest within Hacienda Don Carlos, Nicoya, Guanacaste. This 160m² timber home thoughtfully embraces its natural surroundings while prioritizing sustainability and efficiency. Its linear design captures uninterrupted views of the Nicoya Valley and Cerro Caballito, seamlessly connecting the home with the landscape.

Smart Orientation and Ventilation

The house is oriented north, which not only minimizes heat gain in Guanacaste’s warm climate but also ensures optimal natural ventilation. The single-sloped roof further enhances airflow, maintaining a cool and comfortable interior environment. As a result, the design significantly reduces reliance on mechanical cooling systems, making the home both efficient and practical.

Respecting the Land

Casa Sanabria rests on an existing artificial plateau of cracked stone, which was already present on the site. By building on this pre-existing foundation, the project avoided unnecessary damage to the surrounding landscape. Furthermore, the lightweight timber structure sits on mini-piles, carefully preserving the untouched subsoil below. This approach reflects the project’s commitment to minimal environmental disruption.

Locally Sourced Timber

The house is constructed entirely from solid timber sourced from certified plantations within Hacienda Don Carlos. By using local materials, the design team reduced the carbon footprint while supporting sustainable forestry practices. The structure, partitions, and envelope showcase the versatility and warmth of timber, making it both functional and beautiful.

Framing the Views

Large, carefully placed openings throughout the house frame breathtaking views of the Nicoya Valley. These openings bring in natural light while maintaining shade to ensure comfort. As a result, each space feels open and connected to the outdoors, creating a living experience that balances protection and immersion.
